istock_000005664082small_200px.jpgEligibility is based on annual income and number of residents in the home for those who own their own homes. The same income levels are used for renters, but we only provide safety features, such as grab bars, railings, etc. Rental tenants need to work with their landlords for property repairs and upgrades. All low-income Berkeley residents are eligible to apply. Income levels are more generous than most assistance programs. Clients that are above the eligibility levels may still be eligible for free labor with the client paying for materials.

The program runs from July 1 to June 30 each year. Clients can apply anytime during the cycle up to April 30th to be eligible within that program year. Clients applying past the April 30th deadline will then be considered for the next cycle beginning in July. Once we determine a client is eligible, we make a home visit and note what repairs are needed. A worksheet is created and then we schedule with the clients for the crews to come and do the work.

Energy Tips

Update your exit signs.  Many older exit signs still use incandescent bulbs.  Newer exit signs use LED technology, consuming approximately 1/10th the energy of an older sign and lasting 10's of 1000's of hours longer.  For enhanced safety, consider getting LED exit signs with emergency back-up batteries and safety lamps.
