Home Safety & Repair Program
(formerly Berkeley Home Repair)

CESC has provided home repair services to the Berkeley community since 1989. Eligible customers are entitled to FREE services including: plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs; heater and roof repair; mobility and access installations (grab bars, hand rails, lifts, ramps, etc.); and fire and earthquake safety measures (structural and non-structural retrofits, window bar replacement, smoke and CO detectors, etc.). Residents not eligible for free repairs can enjoy quality services at a reasonable fee-for-service basis.

CESC is a licensed general contractor and has an in-house crew of conscientious, considerate, quality-minded workers to take care of your home repair needs. For homeowners, CESC is funded through the City of Berkeley by HUD Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. Our sister program for renters is funded by the City of Berkeley through the general fund.

CESC works hand in hand with other community groups such as Center for Independent Living, ReBuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April), City and State Weatherization, Visiting Nurses Association, California Youth Energy Services (CYES), and many others. These partnerships serve as gateways to an abundance of services for our customers.

"I appreciate how the work was prioritized with my health and safety being of importance. The supervisor and the workers were truly a pleasure having around. Everything was done efficiently and timely." Ms. Geri Corbin

"I am grateful for the repairs and services you did at my home. Finding repairmen is not an easy task. The workers did an excellent job. They were skillful and good cleaner- uppers." Mrs. Daisy Ross

"Over the years I have had many repairs made to my house. By far this has been my best experience. Thanks again to the crew…" Nancy Threatt

"When applying for services, we had hoped for assistance in earthquake retrofitting. We found that the extensive work required for our home was beyond what this program offered. However, we were amazed at the extent of safety and repair services offered. …The Construction Services Manager made a thorough survey of our home noting safety problems we were unaware of. He was extremely helpful in advising us regarding solutions to a number of problems and arranged for work to be done the following week.

Clarence, a very competent worker, was able to tackle a variety of problems requiring a range of skills including plumbing and electrical. He was friendly and took pride in doing a good job. We certainly recommend him highly.

We truly appreciate this service, which helps keep this family home in good condition. This has been a challenge on a reduced retirement income." Eldo & Adeline Bianchi
