Installing a solar hot water system for a family of 3-4 will typically cost between $7,500 and $9,500 depending on system design. Researching solar technology and installers can help you to compare individual component prices and project bids.
Rebates and Incentives. Your installed project may qualify for federal incentives.
California Solar Intiative (CSI) Rebate.
On January 21, 2010, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)
approved the CSI Solar Thermal Rebate Program, which goes into effect
May 1, 2010 and applies to all commercial systems installed after July
15, 2009. It offers a one time rebate of $12.82 per therm displaced, up
to $1,875 for residential systems. Visit the CPUC for more information.
Financing Strategies. You may be able to finance your system through your mortgage or with construction or home equity loans. In deciding how to pay for your solar system, consider contract obligations and whether interest payments are tax-deductible.
Update your exit signs. Many older exit signs still use incandescent bulbs. Newer exit signs use LED technology, consuming approximately 1/10th the energy of an older sign and lasting 10's of 1000's of hours longer. For enhanced safety, consider getting LED exit signs with emergency back-up batteries and safety lamps.
